Dr. Phillip Johnson Receives PF’s William Wilberforce Award

By Wilberforce Forum

Award Honors Individuals Who Battle Philosophies that Demean Humanity

Respected law scholar Dr. Phillip E. Johnson received the 16th annual William Wilberforce Award for his profound contributions to the academic debate on the origins of human life. The Wilberforce Forum, the Christian worldview thinking, teaching, and advocacy division of Prison Fellowship, established the award in 1987. Chuck Colson, Chairman of Prison Fellowship, presented the award.

Dr. Johnson, long-time professor of law, now emeritus, at the University of California-Berkeley and former clerk to Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren, has written numerous books arguing against evolution and naturalistic philosophy. He is also founder of the Intelligent Design theory. He continues to challenge the scientific community, as well as the Church, that these issues reach beyond evolution versus creation, to questions of the significance of life itself.

“Dr. Johnson has brought this intellectual process and legal acumen to bear in the debate about the origins of life. At the same time he has consistently responded to his opponents with Christian love and grace, seeking to build bridges rather than dividing walls,” said Colson. “We honor him for his commitment to truth, and his courage in making it known.”

Prison Fellowship annually bestows the William Wilberforce Award on an individual who has made a difference in the face of formidable societal problems and injustices. The award is given in honor of William Wilberforce, an eighteenth century British parliamentarian who stood against his party in his campaign to abolish the slave trade and honor the basic human right to life.
