Two-hour version: 23 expert witnesses captured on one product

Is there a genuine scientific controversy over evolution? A new documentary movie about Kansas Science Hearings held two years ago answer that question with a resounding "Yes." The film also shows why the controversy needs to be addressed in public schools.

Kansas Science Hearings: Exposing the Evolution Controversy is a fast-paced documentary filled with drama, as witnesses testify about systematic suppression of the controversy, fear in the class room and loss of jobs for teaching Darwin objectively. All of the witnesses were cross examined by an ACLU attorney. The hearings end with fireworks - a shocking refusal of the Materialists to submit to questions from the other side.

Twenty three expert witnesses testified about two distinctly different models for teaching about the ultimate question to children in Kansas schools. They included 5 PhD biologists, 4 PhD biochemists, 3 PhD Chemists, 1 PhD Geneticist (the inventor of the Gene Gun), 1 PhD Quantum Physicist, 3 Philosophers of Science, 1 PhD Professor of Education, 3 biology teachers, a Muslim science writer and an attorney.

Where did humans come from? What is the origin of life and its diversity? Any answer to these questions have a major impact on what we believe about religion, ethics, morals and even government. The US was founded on the idea that we derive unalienable rights from a Creator. However, materialistic cultures claim that because life is not a creation it has no inherent rights. Human rights exist only to the extent provided by government.

"The materialistic model seeks to teach children that the universe is self existing and that life is the product of unguided evolutionary change. Because unguided material causation is assumed, the student is offered no information critical of that explanation," said William S. Harris, PhD, a biochemist who led the team that developed the competing objective model.

"The objective model we developed teaches only the materialistic explanation, but also informs students of genuine scientific controversies about that view. There are two major controversies - one deals with the origin of life itself (chemical evolution), and the other deals with macro-evolution, the idea that random variation and natural selection have generated complex new bio-systems like cellular motors, factories and processing plants," said Greg Lassey, another team member. "The presentations show undeniable controversies and the need to teach them."

The documentary is available in two versions: a two hour version for the general public (ARN #V064), and a five hour version (ARN #V065 ) that covers the testimony of each witness in depth and includes all of the hearing exhibits and transcripts. This is an archival set for journalists and serious students of the debate.

Nowhere else can you find key highlights of over 20 hours of public testimony on this important topic from a panel of 23 world-wide experts including William S. Harris, Charles Thaxton, Jonathan Wells, Bruce Simat, Ralph Seelke, Edward Peltzer, Russell Carlson, John Sanford, Robert DiSilvestro, Bryan Leonard, Daniel Ely, Roger DeHart, Jill Gonzalez-Bravo, John Milliam, Nancy Bryson, James Barham, Stephen Meyer, Angus Menuge, Warren Nord, Mustafa Akyol, Michael Behe, and John H. Calvert.

The controversy over the Kansas Science Standards for the State's public schools made the news in 2004 through 2006 not only in Kansas but across the nation with such headlines as "Kansas School Board Redefines Science, CNN" and "Kansas Drops Study of Evolution, ABC News". So, if it was so well publicized, why is this book called "The Silenced Hearings"? Well, while we heard many opinions about the science standards, we heard little, if any, actual coverage of the science standard hearings. The science standard hearings were held by the State Board of Education for the purpose of clarifying science education issues so that the Board could determine what was needed in the science standards.

In June of 2004, the Kansas State Board of Education received two entirely different recommendations for science standards regarding the origin of life and its diversity form the 26-member science writing committee. These were referred to as the Majority Report (Krebs Group Standards) and the Minority Report (Harris Group Standards). The purpose of the hearings was to offer public testimony from science and education experts in order to decide which recommendation to adopt.

Deanna Schoenberger was shocked by what she learned from these hearings, as well as the outcome, and was motivated to create a brief summary report of the event that even non-scientists could appreciate. This well-layout book presents a clear 2-3 page summary of the major points presented by each speaker, including color photos of each speaker and drawings and diagrams to help clarify the scientific points for the layman. Not only will you hear first-hand testimony from some of the well-known scientists in the ID movement like Michael Behe, Stephen Meyer, Jonathan Wells and Charles Thaxton, but you will hear from other lesser known, but impressively qualified scientists, such as Edward Peltzer, John Sanford, Ralph Seelke, Robert DiSilvestro and Giuseppe Sermonti. Attorneys Pedro Irigonegarary and John Calvert also provide expert testimony on how origins can be taught objectively in the public schools.

This book is highly recommended as a very readable introduction into the origins controversy, and as a resource guide for anyone involved in science education standards. It works well as a standalone book, but is even better when ordered as a kit with 2 hour (V064) or 5 hours (V065) video recording of the Kansas School Hearings.
