(Two DVD Set: V059A-Lecture and V059B-Interview)
NOTE: THIS DVD IS MULTI-REGIONAL
LECTURE (V059A)
For decades Darwinists have complained that creationists just criticize evolution theory and they have no testable scientific theory of their own. Walter ReMine has responded to this charge with his Message Theory as detailed in his book and this lecture & interview at the University of California, Santa Barbara entitled The Biotic Message.
ReMine’s Message Theory states that life contains a message that says something about its origin. In the lecture ReMine postulates that Message Theory is scientifically testable based on three key tenets of the theory. Life is reasonably designed: 1) for survival; 2) to look like the product of one designer (rather than multiple independent designs); and 3) to resist all other explanations.
After defining the theory, ReMine summarizes the standard arguments for evolution such as common descent, transposition (lateral gene transfer) and atavism (genetic throwbacks). He explains how each of these arguments fail to match the data: absence of gradualism, systematic absence of lineage, convergence (multiple independent development of similar systems such a flight and vision) and the presence of biologic universals (biological features shared by virtually all of life including DNA, RNA, genetic code, left-handed amino acids, etc.). He also addresses how punctuationists (such as Stephen Gould) responded to their setbacks by constructing a theory that is compatible with a complete absence of evidence for evolution. Few students know that punctuated equilibria theory is specially constructed to destroy the appearance of lineages and identifiable ancestors. ReMine explains how biological systems that some have identified as being poorly designed (like the panda’s thumb or the inverted retina) are consistent with a theory of intelligent design.
ReMine openly invites the audience to test his theory or to provide a better testable theory of design (if you were an intelligent agent designing the universe, what would be your design criteria?). Whether you embrace the Message Theory or not, ReMine has defined it clearly and put it on the table for discussion. His command of the various evolutionary theories and how they contradict the actual known data is impressive and make this lecture a valuable addition to the ARN lecture series. The lecture is followed by a lively Q&A session where the university audience grapples with the author to understand the Message Theory and its implications.

INTERVIEW (V059B)
The second DVD in this 2-DVD set is an exclusive interview with Walter ReMine where he responds to numerous questions about his personal journey, his book, Message Theory, and reactions from creationists and evolutionists. The discussion topics include:
- You once considered Darwinian evolution to be a fact. What changed your mind?
- What philosophy of science do you endorse?
- How has your book been received?
- How do you approach the issue of teaching origins in the public schools?
- Do beneficial mutations occur in nature?
- What is discontinuity systematics?
- What do you think about Junk DNA?
- Has punctuated equilibria theory been successful in explaining the major evolutionary change that is not explained by traditional neo-Darwinism?
- What obstacles do creationists need to overcome to make headway in the scientific community?
- Why do you think the amoeba-to-man Evolutionary Theory is unscientific?

What People Are Saying About the Biotic Message
"The Biotic Message, a bold and fascinating attempt to state a comprehensive theory, the short of which is that life is designed to convey a message that life is the product of a single designer -- as opposed to multiple designers or evolution. The thesis itself is exciting, and the argument for it provides a fresh perspective on a number of specific issues pertaining to evolution." .... "Original, and stimulating to the mind, and very thoroughly worked out. ... Well worth the money.
- Phillip E. Johnson, author of Darwin on Trial
"I'd like to add my enthusiastic appreciation of Walter ReMine's book. ... I believe the book is an extremely valuable addition to the intelligent design literature and deserves a wide readership.
The main reason for my enthusiasm is that Walter presents arguments in his book that, so far as I know, have not been presented anywhere else. He particularly shows that principles of population genetics work strongly against evolutionary theory. I myself was floored by his discussion showing that the sickle cell gene actively works through natural selection to exclude a more efficient mutant, hbC from gaining a foothold in malaria-prone populations. The reason I was astounded is that I DID MY THESIS ON SICKLE CELL HEMOGLOBIN and I never thought of or read of the connection that Walter made.
As far as Message Theory goes, in the book Walter does a great job of explaining it. The theory appears to be original, defensible, and scientific. Is it true? It very well could be, as far as I can see, and I look forward to a discussion of it."

1993 (Hardcover edition), St. Paul Science, 538 pp.
Published in 1993, The Biotic Message has become
essential reading for anyone with more than a passing interest in the
origins debate.
Written with a focus on biological issues, this book
engages evolutionists on their own terms, on their issues, using their
testimony, and their ground rules - including the central role of testability
within Science. ReMine attacks many evolutionary illusions, and offers
a new creation theory of biology: Life was designed to shout that it
had only one creator, and to resist all other explanations.
ReMine's underlying theme is that an intelligent designer/creator
has placed a pattern in living things (and their fossils) which defies
a naturalistic explanation and points the observers to the one intelligent
designer. This is The Biotic Message: that the unity in biology indicates
an intelligent designer, and the pattern of diversity defies any consistent
naturalistic explanation.
Be forewarned, this book is not a light read-it is lengthy
and densely packed, and is designed for the serious student of the origins
controversy. Although it resembles a freshman-level college text, it
has been enjoyed by high school students and is suitable for public
schools. A strong background in science is not necessary, as the book
is tutorial in its approach.
ReMine addresses evolutionary issues, such as:
- The carnival shell game maneuvering behind natural
selection and the anthropic principle.
- The inability of evolutionary geneticists to make
their models consistent with their claims and the data.
- The flexibility and untestability of evolutionary
theory, it has no coherent structure. Many evolutionists are quoted
to demonstrate the contradictions within evolutionary theory.
- The philosophical double-standards held by evolutionists,
one standard for creation, and a lesser one for evolution.
- The misuse of terminology and classification methods
to create evolutionary illusions.
- The fossil record systematically refutes the predictions
of Darwinism. This is documented by quoting evolutionists themselves.
- Punctuationists (such as Stephen Gould) responded
to their setbacks by constructing a theory that is compatible with
a complete absence of evidence for evolution. Few students know that
punctuated equilibria theory is specially constructed to destroy the
appearance of lineages and identifiable ancestors.
The book doesn't just take shots at evolution, however,
it actively proposes a scientifically testable creation theory to take
its place. The new theory overturns Darwin's and Gould's arguments about
"imperfect" designs, and most notably, the evolutionist's
central argument - the nested pattern of life. The full range of biological
issues are discussed, from vestigial organs, to embryology, to biomolecules,
to biogeography, and more.
Recommendations
"Voluminous, well-written, thoroughly researched and beautifully
bound. ... ReMine's bibliography and text references read like a who's
who of pro-evolutionary icons with names like Darwin, Gould, Lewin,
Lewontin, Futuyma, Strahler, Dobzhansky, Haldane, Crick, and even Skinner,
Sagan and Hawking. The author quotes these scientists at length, critiques
them and uses the research of one to contradict he other. ...ReMine
is persuasive and challenging."
