Welcome to the ARN Announce email reports. These brief emails are sent out every couple of weeks to help you keep up with the top intelligent design news and resources at a glance, and provide you with quick links to more information. We also provide you with advanced notice of new products and special sales available only to our email subscribers.

The ARN Stimulus Package

The ARN Stimulus Package
(your opportunity to stimulate open minds)

Just as the economy has brought many large institutions to their knees, it has also finally caught up with us at ARN.  However, we don’t think the current administration’s bailout plans or stimulus packages are going to solve the problem here at ARN.  In 2009 our income, which is based primarily on product sales and donations, dropped 30% and 2010 doesn’t look much better. We have put a hold on new product development and cut expenses wherever we could.  However, since we are staffed primarily by volunteers, there are not many other cuts we can make.

So in an effort to generate some much-needed funds, we have created the ARN Stimulus Package. We want to stimulate you to share these exclusive ARN DVD resources with your friends, family, and co-workers, which in turn will stimulate them to ponder some of the great mysteries of the universe. These are some of our favorite DVD lectures, debates and interviews that have been produced here at ARN, which cover the origin of the universe, the origin of life, the Cambrian explosion, problems with Darwinian theory, and evidence for intelligent design:

We are offering packages of these DVDs in plain white slip-jackets for you to give away to your friends. For each $25 donation you send us, we will give you 5 copies of any one of the above titles of your choice.  For each $100 donation you may choose any five titles (5 DVDs for each of your 5 titles = 25 DVDs).

PLEASE NOTE: This special Stimulus Package offer will expire on October 15, 2010.

We need to raise $15,000 in the next two months to pay outstanding bills, print and mail our annual report, and keep the unique ARN resource website online for those who are searching for answers about ID. If you have appreciated the work ARN has done over the years and would like to see it continue, we need to hear from you soon. This email goes out to thousands of ARN Announce subscribers each month.  If just 150 of you would take a moment to make a $100 donation we can end the year in the black and you will receive 25 copies of some great ARN DVDs to stimulate your friends, family, and co-workers.  For all those at ARN that keep important news on intelligent design coming to you every day of the year, I want to thank you in advance for your ongoing support and partnership.  The ARN mission of “providing accessible information on science, technology and society from an intelligent design perspective” cannot continue without you.

You can make your tax-deductible donation online with a credit card or mail a check to ARN, P.O. Box 38069, Colorado Springs, CO 80937.  For donations of $25 or more please specify the catalog # of the DVD you would like in the general comment field when you checkout online, or in the memo field of your check. For those that would prefer to make a donation by phone you may call our toll-free number at 1-888-259-7102 and talk with our office manager Sarah, or leave your credit card information for her on our secure voice mail system.

The Quantum Enigma: Finding the Hidden Key
By Wolfgang Smith

Earlier this year we announced we would be adding some resources on physics and Quantum theory and the implications for ID. Quantum theory is the discovery that subatomic particles act very differently than particles in our observable world, which are described by Newtonian physics. Reductionism and materialism are severely challenged in the quantum world where concepts such as uncertainty, unpredictability, wave/particle duality, instantaneous communication, and the need for an observer reign.  The Quantum Enigma: Finding the Hidden Key is the second title added to our catalog recently that explores the relationship between modern physics and intelligent design (See also Modern Physics and Ancient Faith).

Following the overthrow of the classical world picture by the findings of quantum mechanics, physicists have proposed a broad gamut of alternative world views. This book begins with the major recognition that each of these suffers from a certain 'residual Cartesianism' that has been smuggled in unconsciously. It turns out that the moment one discards this hidden and problematic premise, quantum theory begins to 'make sense' in a way that it never has before. As the author shows, it is now possible for the first time to integrate the findings of quantum physics into a world view that is neither forced nor ad hoc, but conforms to the permanent intuitions of mankind. This treatise can be read not only by scientists, but also by readers unacquainted with the technical conceptions of physics or the quantum-reality literature.

Of particular interest to our readers is Smith's concept of "vertical causation" which he poses as a viable historical alternative to the popular modern "self-caused" theory of the origin of the universe (which he also refers to as temporal or horizontal causation). In this updated third edition of the book, Smith ties vertical causation to intelligent design theory via William Dembski's concept of complex specified information (CSI). Smith concludes that only vertical causation is able to generate CSI.

In The Beginning and Other Essays on Intelligent Design
By Granville Sewell

Professor Granville Sewell joins David Berlinski as another mathematician who has joined the ranks of the Darwin Doubters.  Sewell goes one step further than Berlinski in that he focuses his mathematical mind not only on the evidence against Darwinism, but also the evidence in favor of design.

In this wide-ranging collection of essays on origins, Sewell looks at the big bang, the fine-tuning of the laws of physics, and the evolution of life. He concludes that while there is much in the history of life that seems to suggest natural causes, there is nothing to support Charles Darwin's idea that natural selection of random mutations can explain major evolutionary advances ("easily the dumbest idea ever taken seriously by science," he calls it). Sewell explains why evolution is a fundamentally different and much more difficult problem than others solved by science, and why increasing numbers of scientists are now recognizing what has long been obvious to the layman, that there is no explanation possible without design. This book summarizes many of the traditional arguments for intelligent design, but presents some powerful new arguments as well.
